An **equation** consists of two parts: a left hand side, and a right hand side, with an equals sign = in between. The left hand side and the right hand side are both mathematical expressions, like $2x+5y$, or $\sqrt{17-x}$. For example $2x+5y=\sqrt{17-x}$ is an equation.
