Abstract: I explore the hypothesis that modeling the spatial distribution of mortality rates may act as a good proxy to modeling mortality using socioeconomic factors that would otherwise explain what we observe. We base our analysis on Northern Ireland mortality data and we have access to socioeconomic risk factors including for example, age, income, employment, health, education and political polarisation. We demonstrate that socioeconomic factors are good at explaining mortality but that allowing for spatial structure does not improve the fitting quality of the model any further.
