will speak on

Parity of ranks of elliptic curves

Time: 2:00PM
Date: Wed 27th November 2019
Location: Seminar Room SCN 1.25 [map]

Further information

Abstract: It is in general very difficult to compute ranks of elliptic curves, even if equipped with all the conjectures that are available. On the other hand, the parity of the rank is (conjecturally!) very well-behaved. As 'odd rank' implies 'non-zero rank', this leads to a number of surprising arithmetic phenomena. I will describe how this works, illustrate it with explicit examples, and end by describing what we can actually prove.

(This will be a continuation of the speaker's colloquium talk on 'ranks of elliptic curves' on November 26)

(This talk is part of the Algebra and Number Theory series.)
