Abstract: Dr Sol Garfunkel, Executive Director of the Consortium for Mathematics and
its Applications (COMAP) in the US, will be giving a talk on the work of
COMAP in UCD on Tuesday, 30 January, 2007. (Those of you familiar with the
Mathematical Contest in Modelling (MCM) will know that it is run by COMAP.)
The talk will take place in Room Q014 in the Quinn School of Business,
Belfield and will run from 11.00-12.30. Tea and coffee will be available in
the Contemplation Room of the Quinn School before the talk from 10.30-11.00.




Biographical Sketch for Dr Garfunkel:



Sol Garfunkel received his doctorate in mathematical logic from the
University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1967. He served on the mathematics
faculties of Cornell University and the University of Connecticut at Storrs.
He has dedicated the last 30 years to research and development efforts in
mathematics education. He has been the Executive Director of COMAP, Inc.
since its inception in 1980. Dr. Garfunkel was Chair of the National Academy
of Sciences Committee on the Preparation of High School Teachers. He has
served as the principal investigator of several grants from the National
Science Foundation including the Undergraduate Mathematics and its
Applications Project (UMAP), the HiMap, GeoMap, HistoMap, TechMap,
ResourceMap, and WorkMap projects. He served as the
host for two public television courses, "For All Practical Purposes" and "In
Simplest Terms". He spends his spare time gardening, fishing, birding, and
fostering dogs.
