A century of NUI travelling studentships: the UCD story

Time: 4:00PM
Date: Wed 31st May 2017
Location: Ag 1.01 [map]

Abstract: Since 1908, the NUI Travelling Studentship has provided numerous high performing graduates of UCD, UCC and UCG the opportunity to pursue advanced graduate training overseas. This talk will focus on the story of the over 70 Dublin graduates in maths and maths physics who benefitted from both the travelling studentship, and the travelling studentship prize.

These UCD graduates, some of whom hailed from homes in Limerick, Cork, Galway, Kildare, Fermanagh, Derry and Louth, headed off to Edinburgh, London, Cambridge, Paris, Rome, Johns Hopkins, MIT, Cornell, Yale, Caltech, and elsewhere. Some went on to build impressive research programmes far from home, others returned to Ireland and helped to train later generations of Irish mathematicians and mathematical physicists.

From Frank Murnaghan and Roy Geary a century ago, to Phil Gormley, Dick Timoney, Jim McConnell and Sheila Power in the 1930s, to Gary McGuire, James Gleeson and Francis Dolan in more recent times, UCD has a fine record of providing a first class mathematical education to people from all over Ireland.

(This talk is part of the General Interest series.)
