Abstract: 2-3pm, Thursday 12 November , SCIH 1.51 (O'Brien Centre for Science Hub) UCD.
Lunch pre-colloquium 1-2pm, School Common Room N3.20/N3.21 Science North.
It is a time of upheaval in mathematics. For the first time in history, proof
generation and verification can be done entirely autonomously by a computer,
with superhuman accuracy, speed, and, arguably, ability. Computers are now
proving and refuting major conjectures. I will discuss the breakthroughs of the last
few years which have made these events possible. I will also highlight some
striking recent examples, discuss the implications for the mathematical
community, and make some speculations about the future.
