Soon after Hamilton discovered his magnificent quaternions, his friend the Irish-born John Graves noticed that an analogous 8 dimensional structure also existed. These are called octonions. However these were treated as a mathematical curiosity, whereas quaternions were useful for solving many real life problems. The octonions were neglected, while the quaternions were celebrated.
