This has been verified using fairly heavy mathematical machinery (ie advanced mathematics) and clever computer algorithms. It has not yet been proven and at present, a proof seems very far away from the mathematics community. This is a famous open problem, called the Prime Power Conjecture. Any proof would hopefully provide new insights into many related areas. This problem appears in many disguises throughout mathematics. A proof might illuminate links between finite geometry and number theory.
