Summer projects 2007

As part of the course, students are required to complete a dissertation on a project established in consultation with a staff member. The dissertation should be roughly 10 000 words in length and must be handed in no later than mid-August 2007. Students are also required to present their work in a 15-minute seminar which will contribute to the final dissertation mark.

The 10 weeks preceding the hand-in date will be exclusively devoted to project work. However, students are encouraged to begin thinking about, researching and planning their project as soon as they have settled on a topic.

Below is a list of suggested topics. Students are encouraged to propose alternative topics based on their own interests and career objectives.

Calibration of Met Éireann weather radar data using observed precipitation.

Comparing the performance of WRF and MM5 models in simulation some historical Irish storms.
Occurrence of fog in Ireland: connection with boundary layer structure.
Revisiting the ENIAC forecast.

Investigation of historical extreme weather events around Ireland and the UK.
Climatology and trends in severe weather indicators (CAPE and vertical wind shear) over Ireland using NARR data.
