In this talk I will introduce the topic of my Royal Society-SFI fellowship by discussing the calculation that gave rise to the idea. In particular, I will show that black holes in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime, in the large-D limit, exhibit statistically steady turbulence consistent with Kolmogorov’s theory of 1941. I will also demonstrate that tidal deformations of the horizon can induce turbulent dynamics.
