New methodology for selecting the suitable location/technology for extracting energy from the ocean waves and a case study in the South China Sea

Ocean Renewable Energies are promising alternatives to fossil fuels in areas adjacent to the oceans and seas in order to tackle climate change and support net-zero emission targets. However, the available ocean resources are subject to alteration due to climate change. Among the ocean renewable energies, waves contain the highest energy density, are predictable, and have the least known environmental impacts, in which the suitable sites for wave energy extraction were previously selected based only on the amount of available energy. However, recent achievements in wave energy studies emphasize the importance of changing climate in the sustainability of the resources. Hence, in this seminar, we discuss the impact of changing climate on available wave energy resources and recent advancements in detecting suitable areas and technologies, in line with sustainable development goals (SDGs).
